I’m a digital marketer, specialising in Pinterest and Instagram marketing. I used to be a scientist before transitioning to marketing, the perfect arena to test my analytical and creative skills. When I’m not working, you’ll catch me hanging in the air in aerial silks class.
// What do you love most about your role?
What I love most about digital marketing is how it combines logic, research and creativity. I’ve always been a researcher. As a child I was an avid reader, always curious to learn facts about my favourite topics (dinosaurs at that point in time) and sharing that information with others. I also enjoyed drawing, but that fell to the wayside as I started my career path in high school to become a vet. (That wasn’t meant to be unfortunately – allergies!)
// What led you to the career you are in?
I swapped over to life sciences in uni and was lucky to secure a science job after graduation. But soon discovered that working in a lab long-term wasn’t for me. After 3 years, the daily tasks started to feel repetitive and dull. There was also no pathway for advancement without doing further study.
Before I switched careers to marketing I researched (hey, I did say research was in my blood 😉) what the job would be like by talking to people who were already doing it. It would let me combine my creative genius while still having an analytical aspect to it. Also with the everchanging nature of digital marketing, I couldn’t get bored in this role.
// What has been your biggest hurdle?
Imposter syndrome. I don’t come from a marketing background, but I’m a fast learner.
// Do you have a favourite SA business that you are passionate about supporting?
My fave SA business is Melvory! I actually met Elaine at the SA Woman Breakfast back when we were returning to “normal” after COVID. I’ve become a huge fan of her products – they don’t aggravate my eczema and leave my skin feeling nourished without any nasties. Best part is they’re made in SA so I know I’m supporting a local business 😊
